Popcorn Finished!
Harvest is progressing nicely. Popcorn is one of our favorite crops to grow, but it is also a nice crop to have finished. The Popcorn plant itself is much stronger than it used to be, but it is still the corn that we worry the most about. There is a fairly small window of harvest because the kernels need to be between 13 and 17 percent moisture in order to pop properly. Because of that, when the popcorn is ready we drop everything else and concentrate on that. Popcorn is also the most likely corn to fall down over time or in bad weather, so we always breath easier when the popcorn is in the bin. Saturday was our final day of popcorn harvest. We finished up about 6:00, kernel cleaned the combines and auger carts, and came back to the shop to be ready for our last variety of seed beans on Monday. It sure has been nice to enjoy a great Sunday without work. We celebrated My Dad’s 79th birthday (October 18th) and my daughter Riley’s 17th birthday (October 20th). Shoot, even the Colts won! what a great day. As of today, we are a little over 70% complete with our harvest.
